Allan Turner does not vouch for the quality of these courses. In many cases the organisers have self identified themselves as running a Person Centred course. The course which are identified as BACP Accredited Courses are separately and independently accredited by BACP. It is becoming evident that BACP is looking for a clear philosophy of counselling from candidates applying for accreditation. It is difficult for candidates to describe a credible philosophy of counselling if the training course itself is muddled on this subject.

Before signing up for a course be prepared to ask questions:

1. Are the course staff members of a recognised Person Centred Association. In Britain expect, BAPCA, ADPCA or PCT(Scotland).

2. Is there a core theoretical model? Be wary of courses who claim to integrate different models. If you have not been taught a clear core theoretical model will you be able to describe one when you apply for accreditation?

3. The course philosophy should be in harmony with the Person Centred Approach. Such a course should be student led with plenty of peer assessment, or preferably, self assessment.

4. Be suspicious of too much time being spent on other approaches. Ask the course to say how much time is spent teaching other approaches.

5. Ask the simple question - "do you consider the core conditions to be sufficient". If they are, why waste time on other things. If they are not, the course disagrees with one of Carl Rogers basic propositions. Will it really enable you to understand the Person Centred Approach?

If you are aware of any courses which are not listed please let me know. If you are a course organiser please know that BRIEF details of your course can be carried on this site free of charge. If you pay a modest fee of £10 you can include as much additional information as you like (provided it is "internet ready") If it is not "internet ready" I will do the preparation  work for you at an additional cost. e-mail me for further information.
